First of all, the title is just a gimmick. There is no proof that God exists. I think God did that on purpose. If there were some irrefutable proof that God existed, no one would have the option of not believing in God. The scriptures tell us in many ways that God loves each of us and wants to have a personal relationship with each of us. If there were proof then our relationship with God would be compelled rather than freely given. Let me illustrate.
Suppose I could make a robot, cover it with something very much like skin and hair, program it to sense all of my needs, and make it do everything possible to meet those needs. It might seem like the robot loves me but how can anyone really call that love since the robot has no choice but to perform in the way it was programmed.
Exodus 20:18-19 18 Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. 19 Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”
God did sort-of show Himself to a large group of people when He spoke to the whole Israelite community at Mount Sinai. I say “sort-of” because God hid Himself in a dark cloud but all the people heard His voice as He spoke the 10 commandments to them. Take a look at the result in the verses below.
Those people witnessed irrefutable proof of God’s existence but their reaction was not one of undying love and affection for God.
In order for us to freely choose to love God, we also must be able to freely choose to believe that God does not exist. For those who want to believe in God there is plenty of evidence to support that faith. For those who don’t want to believe in God there is also support for their contention that the Bible is much like the mythologies of other religions.
If you choose to believe there is no God, you should read the book of Ecclesiastes. When Solomon wrote that book it seems like he had no notion of the possibility of eternal life. He paints a pretty bleak picture of this life with nothing to hope for beyond this life. He said both the rich person and the poor person will meet the same end so what is the point of amassing wealth? The wise person and the fool both meet the same end so what is the point of chasing wisdom? If there is nothing beyond this life then life is pretty pointless. Unless you are very evil, like Adolph Hitler, or very good, like Mother Theresa, no one is even going to remember you a couple of generations after you die.
God’s ultimate plan to win our love was summarized by Jesus words.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Now there is a promise you can hang your hat on. If we believe God exists and that His Son, Jesus gave up His life as an atoning sacrifice for our sins, then we will enjoy everlasting life in heaven where we can continue the relationships we had with people we knew in this life as well as be able to see God face to face with out feeling afraid.
